Bi-Weekly Notes (50/51) - 2024

I’m still in the US, living on my own, which has brought a sense of focus I haven’t felt all year. Being in solitude, with fewer interactions than I’d have back home, has helped me channel my energy more towards learning.

Notes

  • My Miami trip started with a bad experience—a cab driver made me uncomfortable. It was unsettling, but I stayed calmed to ensure I reach the destination safely. Sadly, this happens to women too often. Thankfully, my return ride was much better.

  • I had an amazing time with my friends recently and I already miss them. We celebrated Ram's birthday in New Orleans. I wrote a post on my travel.

  • I am currently in Colorado, a city that holds so much history for me. It was once a place I feared because my once-happy memories here turned bittersweet in hindsight. I booked a cab immediately after landing, and headed straight to my Airbnb. The drive was accompanied by the serene sight of moon rising up to the side, yet my mind was unusually quiet. It kept fighting between resisting the pull of the past to succumbing to it. Gladly, it only took a day to move past that feel.

  • My host is a kindred spirit. I am happy I chose this place and every morning we have great conversations. I learn something new every day.

  • I miss Tars deeply. Some of my happiest moments lately come when I close my eyes and his face flashes in my mind—it’s something I never realised I needed so much.

Musings

  • On Empathy: Over the week, I often thought about how empathy is fading over the last few years. Healthy dialogue and debate are crucial, but it's worth asking: where do we draw the line between expressing ourselves and losing our humanity?

  • On liberty: When people have too much freedom without guidance, things can get a a little messy and it is okay. Real progress needs kindness, respect, and fairness. It’s not easy as each of us have different levels of morality. However I think empathy—understanding—and patience are the key. Any change takes time, and we all need to work together to make things better.

  • On Reservation: Why isn't there any reservation in schools or primary education? My friend Ram brought this up, and it got me thinking. I do not have an answer.

  • On immigration: It’s not as straightforward as it seems and is not always bad as it sounds. I also mentioned about the book I am reading as part of my travelogue here. I will write more once I finish.

Personal takeaways

  • Immune cells thrive better at warmer temperatures. I’ve stopped being overly macho about the cold and now I make sure to cover my ears. While I still caught a cold, I’m recovering much faster.

  • Indians often think, milk fat turned into ghee as healthy, but milk protein transformed into whey is harmful. We should question and think carefully before believing social media myths.

  • Over-consuming without creating leaves little room for growth—a principle that I would like to follow. At this point in my life, I hope to make the best use of my privilege by focusing more on creating and contributing rather than simply consuming.

It has been a thought-provoking couple of weeks. Looking forward to more exploration and learning.
