Earth belongs to everyone

This is my first post of 2025. I have been sick for sometime ever since I came back from US, so couldn't post weekly notes. However, I plan to start again by the end of this month.

Before that, given everything happening around the world, I wanted my first post to reflect on the idea that the Earth is shared by everyone. Sometimes, breaking things down to their simplest form (fundamentals) can help us see the heart of the matter. So, here’s my attempt to explain this as if I were talking to a 4-year-old.

Did you know?

A long time ago, people moved all over the world to find places to live. No one really ‘owned’ land – the earth belongs to everyone. But now we have countries and borders, and some people feel scared when others move to their country because they worry things will change or they’ll lose their culture.

Why do people feel this way?

Some worry they’ll lose their traditions, while others moving might want to keep their own traditions. But neither side should force their ways on the other. Instead, there should be healthy debates and fair policies to balance things. That’s why we have governments. It’s not easy, but calling people hurtful names like ‘criminal aliens’ isn’t okay.

Is it fair to ask for help but not share?

Many countries hire people from other places to work – to build, grow food, or take care of others. But when it’s time to let those workers live there, they say, ‘You don’t belong.’ That’s not fair, is it?

What should we remember?

When we get too caught up in preserving land, borders, or traditions, we risk losing our humanity. The earth is big enough for everyone. By sharing and being kind, we build a better world where everyone can belong. Sometimes, it is okay to say, “I don’t have enough to help more”, and work on bridging the gap. But that doesn’t mean shutting doors completely or turning away from the idea of finding solutions. We can’t hold on to our humanity by shutting ourselves off from one another.
